17β-estradiol improves healing of bone defects using the rabbit’s own stem cells

Abstract

The E2+MSC group exhibited significantly greater healing outcomes at weeks 4 to 10 compared to other treatment groups.

  • Seventeen rabbits were divided into four groups to assess the effects of different treatments on bone healing.
  • Radiological evaluations showed that the E2+MSC treatment group had the highest healing quantities compared to control, MSC, and E2-only groups.
  • Histopathological analysis indicated that the E2+MSC group received significantly higher scores than both the E2 group and the control group (P<0.05).
  • In situ application of 17β-estradiol may enhance the osteogenic capacity of bone marrow-derived MSCs.
  • This approach may accelerate bone healing in cases of radial non-union segmental defects.
