Abdominal ultrasound reduces brain aging problems and changes certain gut bacteria in fast-aging mice

Updated

Abstract

Abdominal ultrasound treatment significantly decreased amyloid-β load and tau hyperphosphorylation in specific brain regions of aging mice.

  • Ultrasound treatment preserved neuronal survival in the hippocampal CA3 region.
  • Treatment led to reduced immunoreactive areas for Iba-1 and GFAP, markers of inflammation.
  • Increases in synaptophysin and cortical PSD-95 suggest improved synaptic health.
  • The treatment significantly reduced the gut microbial taxon Tyzzerella.
  • Changes in other gut bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Akkermansia, showed large effects but were not statistically significant.
  • No significant differences in object recognition or spatial memory were observed between treated and sham-treated mice.
