Faster biological aging linked to kidney stones and insulin resistance in a population study

Abstract

Adults in the highest biological age acceleration tertile have a 21% increased risk of kidney stone disease compared to those in the lowest tertile.

  • Accelerated biological aging is linked to a higher likelihood of developing kidney stones.
  • The odds of kidney stone disease are 1.77 times greater for individuals in the extreme tertiles of phenotypic age acceleration.
  • Insulin resistance may play a role in the relationship between phenotypic age acceleration and kidney stone disease.
  • The proportion of the association mediated by insulin resistance varies between 1.67% and 29.34% across different assessment methods.
  • No significant mediation effects were found between kidney stone risk and the Klemera-Doubal method biological age acceleration.
