Enzyme-like activity similar to ACE-2 found in antibodies targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Some anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike monoclonal antibodies showed ACE2-like catalytic activity that could plausibly contribute to COVID-19 and long COVID biology.

Evidence

This human monoclonal antibody screening and enzyme-kinetics study identified 4 anti-spike mAbs from 4 sources that cleaved angiotensin II with lower Vmax and Km values than ACE2 and with inhibitor responses unlike native ACE2.

Caveat

The work tested antibody activity in biochemical assays, so it does not show that these antibodies cause long COVID symptoms in people.
