Link between excess growth hormone and fatty liver using liver imaging

Abstract

Moderate-to-severe liver steatosis was observed in 36.2% of acromegaly patients, significantly lower than the 68.8% in metabolically matched controls.

  • Acromegaly patients had lower hepatic steatosis scores compared to metabolically comparable individuals.
  • Liver stiffness measurements were also lower in acromegaly patients and healthy individuals than in matched controls.
  • GH levels were lower in acromegaly patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) compared to those without.
  • Higher GH levels were associated with lower hepatic steatosis scores.
  • Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and triglycerides were positively correlated with steatosis scores.
