Acupuncture changes gut bacteria and their products in rats with chronic migraine

Updated

Abstract

Acupuncture treatment significantly attenuated hyperalgesia in chronic migraine model rats.

  • Serum levels of brain-gut peptides, including 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), were regulated by acupuncture.
  • The gut microbial community structure and metabolic profile altered in chronic migraine model rats.
  • Acupuncture affected 10 gut microbial genera and 13 fecal metabolites.
  • The findings suggest that the gut-brain axis may be involved in the chronification of migraine.
