Immediate effects of nitrate and caffeine, alone and together, on 1000 m kayak ergometer performance in top athletes

Updated

Abstract

The isolated and combined ingestion of beetroot (BR) and caffeine (CAF) had no effect on 1000 m time trial performance in highly trained kayakers.

  • No ergogenic effect was observed for either BR or CAF supplementation compared to the placebo condition.
  • Physiological parameters, including cardiorespiratory function and muscle oxygenation, showed no significant changes with BR or CAF.
  • Perceptual responses such as fatigue and effort levels were similar across all conditions.
  • In the BR+PLA condition, a 5.00% decrease in the respiratory equivalent of oxygen was noted during the 150-250 m section.
  • A 4.19% increase in the respiratory equivalent of carbon dioxide was found in the CAF+PLA condition during the same 150-250 m section.
