Short Exercise Sessions Improve Separation of Brain Networks in Healthy Older Adults

Abstract

Acute exercise improved functional segregation between key brain networks in 37 older adults.

  • Greater segregation was observed between the salience network (SAL) and the default mode network (DMN) after exercise.
  • Increased segregation was also noted between the SAL and the affect-reward network (ARN) following acute exercise.
  • These findings suggest acute exercise may positively influence neural network integrity associated with cognition and mental health in older adults.
  • The study highlights the potential of acute exercise to counteract age-related changes in brain network function.
