Psilocybin or ethocybin causes lasting stronger avoidance memory in male mice

Updated

Abstract

Both psilocybin (PSY) and ethocybin (ETH) resulted in an increased expression of aversive emotional memory in male mice.

  • Chronic social stress in male mice led to excessive aversion learning and memory, indicated by increased freezing behavior.
  • Sub-chronic administration of SSRI antidepressant reversed the excessive memory of stressed mice.
  • Both psychedelics at 3 mg/kg caused significant blood-brain exposure to their major metabolites and head twitch responses.
  • Relative to a control group, PSY and ETH increased the time spent freezing during memory testing.
  • No significant effects of psilocybin or ethocybin were observed on glutamatergic synaptic protein densities in key brain regions.
