ADAMTS13 or Caplacizumab may reduce blood clot and immune trap buildup in flowing blood of COVID-19 patients

Updated

Abstract

The percentage of H3Cit + MPO+ neutrophils was dramatically increased in patients with severe COVID-19 compared to asymptomatic controls.

  • Severe COVID-19 patients exhibited significantly increased NETosis compared to those with asymptomatic or mild disease.
  • In severe and critical COVID-19 patients, the reserve of NETosis was reduced, as indicated by unchanged levels of NETosis markers upon stimulation.
  • Accumulation of neutrophil extracellular traps and thrombus formation was significantly higher in severe and critical COVID-19 patients compared to asymptomatic controls.
  • Both recombinant ADAMTS13 and caplacizumab markedly decreased NET accumulation and thrombus formation under arterial shear conditions.
