ADHD is associated with shorter telomere length in an independent clinical sample of 665 cases and 995 controls.

  • Telomere shortening may indicate accelerated biological aging related to ADHD and other psychiatric conditions.
  • Global and local negative correlations between telomere length and ADHD were observed, particularly at a chromosome 17 locus.
  • Shared genomic analysis revealed several enriched loci across chromosomes, including genes that influence cellular functions and development.
  • Mendelian randomization analysis suggested a one-way causal relationship where ADHD may lead to shorter telomere length.
  • Higher genetic scores for longer telomere length correlated with reduced ADHD symptoms.
