Probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PS128 improves gut symptoms and changes blood microRNAs and gut bacteria in children with Tourette syndrome

Abstract

Seventy-three participants completed a 12-week trial of the psychobiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PS128 for Tourette syndrome.

  • The primary outcome, reduction in tic severity measured by the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS), did not show significant differences between the PS128 and placebo groups.
  • Participants receiving PS128 reported significantly greater reductions in gastrointestinal symptoms, especially upper abdominal pain.
  • There was a trend toward improved attentional performance on the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) in the PS128 group.
  • Eight differentially expressed miRNAs were identified following the PS128 intervention, suggesting involvement in nervous system development and synaptic regulation.
  • Significant upregulation of miR-199a-3p and miR-143-3p was confirmed in the PS128 group compared with placebo.
  • Increased abundance of Lactiplantibacillus after PS128 intervention was associated with higher miR-199a-3p expression and lower Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scores.
