Adult exposure to bisphenol A lowers sperm quality by disrupting the hormone system controlling reproduction in rats

Abstract

BPA exposure at doses of 5 or 25 mg/kg/day caused a reduction in sperm production and specific functional parameters.

  • Sperm production, reserves, and transit time were reduced following BPA exposure.
  • Damage to acrosomes and plasma membranes was observed, alongside reduced mitochondrial activity.
  • Increased levels of defective spermatozoa were noted, which may have affected sperm function.
  • Serum concentrations of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were decreased, while estradiol levels increased.
  • Gene expression changes indicated an attempt by the pituitary to restore normal hormone levels in response to BPA exposure.
  • BPA exposure is associated with disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, leading to a potential state of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
