Link Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Risk of Overall and Specific Causes of Death

Updated

Abstract

Among 5603 participants, 6.6% had any age-related macular degeneration (AMD), with only late AMD associated with a more than doubling of all-cause mortality.

  • Only late AMD was linked to a hazard ratio of 2.01 for all-cause mortality after adjusting for confounding factors.
  • Participants with late AMD had over a 3-fold greater risk of mortality from causes other than cardiovascular disease and cancer.
  • No significant association was found between the presence of AMD or early AMD and all-cause or specific-cause mortality.
  • The findings suggest that late AMD may reflect underlying biological aging processes.
