Changes in brain tissue and chemical signals in people with long COVID and those recovered from COVID-19

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Long COVID and recovered COVID-19 were linked to altered brain MRI microstructure signals, with neurochemical differences most evident in long COVID versus recovered controls.

Evidence

The evidence is a small multimodal 3T MRI study of 47 participants: 19 with long COVID, 12 COVID-recovered healthy controls, and 16 healthy controls without COVID-19 infection.

Caveat

The sample was small and cross-sectional, so the imaging and spectroscopy differences cannot by themselves prove that SARS-CoV-2 caused the brain changes.
