Abstract
The study analyzed gut microbiota in 143 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) aged 2-13 years.
- The gut microbiota diversity in the ASD group did not change significantly with age, unlike the typically developing (TD) group, which showed increased diversity.
- A subset of 30 children with ASD experiencing chronic constipation (C-ASD) exhibited decreased gut microbiota diversity and specific species depletion.
- Metagenomic analysis indicated dysregulation of metabolic activities in the C-ASD group that could relate to their gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Differential metabolites identified through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry were linked to neurotransmitter metabolic pathways, including serotonin and dopamine.
- Altered levels of specific bacteria were associated with the differences in metabolite abundance.
