Changes in Brain Blood Flow and Activity Coordination in Patients with MELAS Syndrome

Updated

Abstract

MELAS patients in the acute stage had significantly reduced global neurovascular coupling compared to healthy controls.

  • Neurovascular coupling (NVC) changes were assessed using resting-state functional MRI and arterial spin labeling.
  • MELAS patients showed lower global coupling measures, including CBF-ALFF and CBF-FCS, with P-values less than 0.001.
  • Alterations in coupling ratios were primarily observed in the middle cerebral artery area.
  • Increased NVC ratios were noted in acute stroke-like lesions, with signs of recovery in the chronic stage.
  • These findings may help improve understanding of MELAS and its underlying mechanisms.
