Bone repair using lithium-releasing bioactive glass and gel hydrogel that supports new blood vessel and bone growth

Abstract

GM/M-Li hydrogel increased bone mineral density by 50% compared to the model group in a rabbit model of bone necrosis.

  • The hydrogel supported cell proliferation in a suitable microenvironment, displaying good biocompatibility.
  • Sustained release of lithium and silicon lasted over 35 days, promoting the growth and movement of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial cells.
  • In vitro and in vivo results indicated enhanced bone formation and blood vessel development.
  • Histological analysis confirmed improved outcomes related to bone regeneration and reduced fat infiltration.
