Antibodies from mRNA COVID-19 vaccines may interfere with lab tests measuring pegylated drug levels

Abstract

Anti-PEG antibody levels were approximately 10-fold higher post-vaccination compared to pre-vaccination in about 33% of mRNA-1273 vaccine recipients.

  • Elevated anti-PEG antibody titers were detected in individuals who received the mRNA-1273 vaccine compared to control samples.
  • Anti-PEG antibodies persisted for over 6 months in some vaccine recipients.
  • Individuals vaccinated with BNT162b2 or Ad26.COV2.S vaccines had anti-PEG antibody levels similar to controls.
  • Serum from individuals with elevated anti-PEG antibodies showed decreased detection of the pegylated drug, pegfilgrastim.
  • Anti-PEG antibodies could interfere with drug level assessments in pharmacokinetic studies of pegylated pharmaceuticals.
