Antibiotic Use and the Risk of Multiple Sclerosis: A Review and Combined Analysis

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Several antibiotic classes except penicillin were associated with higher multiple sclerosis risk in the pooled analysis.

Evidence

A systematic review and meta-analysis narrowed 3606 records to six studies and estimated class-specific MS odds ratios for penicillin, tetracycline, sulfonamides, macrolides, and quinolones.

Caveat

Only six studies were included, several pooled estimates had substantial heterogeneity, and the association does not prove antibiotics cause MS.
