Antibiotics affecting cell energy centers may extend lifespan in C. elegans

Updated

Abstract

Mitochondrial inhibitors significantly extended the median lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans worms.

  • Treatment with doxycycline and azithromycin improved worm lifespan and enhanced pharyngeal pumping rates.
  • These treatments reduced lipofuscin accumulation and lowered ATP levels in comparison to untreated worms.
  • DPI, another mitochondrial inhibitor, also prolonged the median lifespan of the worms.
  • Vitamin C, a pro-oxidant, did not extend lifespan and increased energy consumption instead.
