How antibodies may help SARS-CoV-2 enter cells and change its shape

Abstract

Four groups of monoclonal antibodies targeting the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) were identified, each associated with distinct conformational regulation and antibody-mediated entry (AME) abilities.

  • Differences in RBD conformational regulation are linked to unique epitopes targeted by each antibody group.
  • Some antibody groups were found to mediate entry into THP1-derived macrophages, while others were capable of inhibiting this entry.
  • These findings suggest a connection between how antibodies regulate RBD conformation and their ability to mediate AME.
  • Understanding these characteristics could help in designing vaccines that minimize AME and promote protective antibody responses.
