Factors linked to not taking antipsychotic medicine as prescribed in adults with new psychosis

Updated

Abstract

Poor adherence behaviors were observed in 17.6% of first-episode psychosis patients.

  • Negative attitudes towards medication adherence were reported in 27.8% of participants.
  • Severe positive symptoms, hospitalization at illness onset, and lower social network engagement were linked to poor adherence behaviors.
  • Factors contributing to negative adherence attitudes included more severe general psychopathology, poorer insight, and increased medication side effects.
  • Cognitive impairments, such as poorer performance on memory tests, were also associated with negative adherence attitudes.
