Rates of Anxiety, Depression, and PTSD in African Migrants: A Review and Analysis

Updated

Abstract

The pooled prevalence of anxiety, depression, and PTSD among 28,367 African migrants was 34.60%, 33.20%, and 37.9%, respectively.

  • Nearly nine out of ten studies included were cross-sectional in nature.
  • Significant heterogeneity was observed in the prevalence estimates for anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
  • Sub-group analyses indicated that studies conducted in Africa reported a higher prevalence of anxiety and depression compared to those conducted outside Africa.
  • Higher prevalence rates for anxiety, depression, and PTSD were associated with studies that used a screening tool rather than a diagnostic tool, with a significant difference noted for depression.
