Two-Way Links Between Anxiety and Digestive Problems in Medical Records

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Anxiety and IBS were strongly linked in both directions, while anxiety-IBD links were weaker and inconsistent.

Evidence

A retrospective TriNetX cohort of matched adults found anxiety preceded IBS (RR 2.737) and IBD (RR 1.555), IBS preceded anxiety (RR 2.211), and IBD did not precede anxiety (RR 0.988).

Caveat

Electronic health record cohort associations may reflect diagnosis, coding, confounding, or care-use patterns rather than causal gut-brain effects.
