Water extract of Codium fragile reduces inflammation in immune cells and inflamed rats

Updated

Abstract

Aqueous extract of Codium fragile (AECF) reduced carrageenan-induced rat paw edema thickness by up to 50%.

  • AECF significantly inhibited the secretion of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E in immune cells without causing cell damage.
  • The extract reduced the expression of inflammatory enzymes inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in a dose-dependent manner.
  • AECF lowered the production of inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukins 1β and 6.
  • The extract prevented the activation of nuclear factor kappa B by inhibiting the phosphorylation and degradation of its inhibitor.
  • Administration of AECF also inhibited the phosphorylation of specific signaling proteins associated with inflammation.
