Abstract

Exposure to 1 µM arsenic significantly aggravated NaIO-induced retinal injury in experimental models.

  • Arsenic exposure reduced cell viability and increased apoptosis in retinal pigment epithelial cells.
  • In vitro, arsenic exposure heightened oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and disrupted epithelial barrier integrity.
  • In vivo, arsenic exacerbated retinal structural damage and impaired mitochondrial function in a mouse model of AMD.
  • Sustained activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway was observed with arsenic exposure.
  • Silencing NF-κB partially reversed arsenic-induced retinal damage, indicating its involvement in the injury mechanism.
