Artesunate may reduce lung scarring by stopping aging of lung support cells through blocking the STAT3/p53 pathway

Updated

Abstract

Art significantly attenuated bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice.

  • Art downregulated markers associated with cellular senescence, including p53 and p21.
  • Myofibroblast markers such as α-SMA and collagen-deposition proteins like fibronectin and collagen I were also reduced by Art.
  • Inhibition of STAT3 phosphorylation was observed, which may contribute to decreased fibroblast senescence.
  • These findings suggest a potential therapeutic role for Art in treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
