Artificial Light at Night and High Blood Pressure Problems in Pregnancy: Differences by Socioeconomic Status in a China Birth Study

Updated

Abstract

Of the 241,608 participants, 3.88% were diagnosed with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs).

  • Higher exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) is associated with increased odds of HDPs, with odds ratios of 1.14 for quartile 2, 1.21 for quartile 3, and 1.09 for quartile 4 compared to the lowest quartile.
  • The association between ALAN and HDPs is influenced by economic factors such as province-level per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and household income.
  • Participants in high-GDP areas with low income show a stronger association with HDPs (OR: 1.15) compared to those in low-GDP areas with low income (OR: 0.97).
  • Evidence regarding the link between ALAN and HDPs is preliminary and warrants further investigation.
