Vitamin C may not play a role in magnetic sensing based on cryptochrome

Updated

Abstract

Ascorbate ions are unlikely to be involved in magnetoreception at concentrations of 1 mM or less.

  • Cryptochrome is a probable host for the sensory radical pair intermediates in avian magnetic compass.
  • Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that ascorbate ions may bind near tryptophan radicals in cryptochrome for a few nanoseconds.
  • The rate of encounters between ascorbate ions and tryptophan radicals is low.
  • The proposed [FADAsc] pathway could lead to a more sensitive magnetic compass than the FAD-tryptophan radical pair.
