Astragaloside IV may help bone marrow stem cells form bone in osteoporotic rats by controlling miR-21 and blocking the Notch pathway

Abstract

Astragaloside IV significantly enhanced the proliferation of bone marrow stem cells from osteoporotic rats (p < 0.05).

  • A-IV increased alkaline phosphatase activity and upregulated the expression of osteogenic genes.
  • Bioinformatic analyses indicated that miR-21 directly targets the Notch2 protein.
  • Treatment with A-IV elevated miR-21 levels while reducing Notch2 protein expression.
  • Inhibition of the Notch signaling pathway by A-IV may relieve its suppression on bone formation.
