Disrupted daily molecular rhythms in support cells of the reward system may increase binge drinking in mice

Updated

Abstract

Disrupting molecular clock function in NAc astrocytes increased binge-like drinking during both drinking-in-the-light and drinking-in-the-dark paradigms (d = 1.44).

  • Chronic alcohol consumption is linked to disruptions in circadian rhythms.
  • Astrocytes in the nucleus accumbens express over 43% of their transcriptome rhythmically.
  • Variants in clock genes have been associated with changes in reward-seeking behavior.
  • Functionally ablating molecular rhythms in NAc astrocytes may influence alcohol drinking behavior.
  • Binge-like drinking was specifically increased in tests measuring alcohol consumption but not in other behavioral assays.
