Abstract

A total of 132 trials involving 4,669,689 participants were included in the assessment of automated telephone communication systems (ATCS).

  • ATCS may increase immunization uptake in children (risk ratio 1.25) and adolescents (risk ratio 1.06).
  • Multimodal ATCS probably enhance screening rates for breast cancer (risk ratio 2.17) and colorectal cancer (risk ratio 2.19).
  • IVR systems appear to improve colorectal cancer screening at 6 months (risk ratio 1.36) but not at later time points.
  • ATCS Plus may slightly improve medication adherence, while IVR likely enhances adherence to both medications and tests for a limited duration.
  • The effects of ATCS on clinical outcomes like blood pressure control and asthma management are generally unclear.
  • Only 3% of trials reported adverse events, with uncertainty about their relation to the interventions.
