Changes in Cell Recycling Activity with Age Differ Between Sexes and Cell Types and Relate to Lower Physical Ability in Older Adults

Updated

Abstract

Autophagy-related gene expression increased with age in primary dermal fibroblasts and induced neurons.

  • Autophagy flux varied by cell type and sex, showing a decrease in male fibroblasts and stability in female fibroblasts with age.
  • In female induced neurons, autophagy flux increased with age.
  • Freshly isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells exhibited increasing heterogeneity in autophagy flux with age, trending higher in older individuals regardless of sex.
  • In adults aged over 70 years, higher autophagy flux was associated with reduced physical function.
  • A pilot intervention study indicated that 12 weeks of mild exercise decreased PBMC autophagy flux while improving physical function.
