Ayahuasca-assisted therapy for addiction in a Canadian Indigenous community: Early experiences

Updated

Abstract

All participants reported reductions in substance use and cravings following ayahuasca-assisted therapy.

  • Participants identified negative thought patterns and barriers related to their addiction, which differed from conventional therapies.
  • Eight participants reported complete cessation of at least one substance at the six-month follow-up.
  • Increased feelings of connectedness with self, others, and nature/spirit were described as key factors associated with reductions in substance use and cravings.
  • The findings may highlight the therapeutic potential of ayahuasca-assisted therapy for addressing problematic substance use.
