Ayahuasca weakens fear memory and quickly changes brain structure in memory and decision areas

Updated

Abstract

Ayahuasca (60 mg/kg) significantly reduced freezing behavior in male Wistar rats after fear memory retrieval.

  • Ayahuasca administration before or after fear memory retrieval affected dendritic spine density in several regions of the dorsal hippocampus and prelimbic cortex.
  • In the prelimbic cortex, the timing of Ayahuasca administration influenced dendritic branching and length.
  • The drug did not lead to changes in adult hippocampal neurogenesis.
  • These results indicate that rapid synaptic remodeling in the dorsal hippocampus and prelimbic cortex may be linked to the reconsolidation-impairing effects of Ayahuasca.
