Immediate effects of ayahuasca on thinking skills: differences in decision-making between frequent and occasional users

Updated

Abstract

Acute ayahuasca intake impaired working memory performance in 24 assessed users.

  • Errors increased in the Sternberg task after ayahuasca intake.
  • Reaction times decreased in the Stroop task, with maintained accuracy for all users.
  • Significantly increased execution and resolution times were observed in the Tower of London task among occasional users, but not experienced users.
  • A correlation analysis indicated that impaired performance in the Tower of London was inversely correlated with lifetime ayahuasca use.
  • Greater prior exposure to ayahuasca was associated with reduced cognitive impairment in experienced users.
