Baicalin may reduce blood-brain barrier leakage during low oxygen by boosting protective proteins in brain blood vessel cells

Updated

Abstract

Baicalin effectively decreased the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in an in vitro model under ischemic conditions.

  • Oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) significantly increased BBB permeability in the model.
  • Baicalin treatment promoted the transcription and expression of tight junction proteins claudin-5 and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1).
  • The levels of protein kinase C (PKC) were reduced following baicalin treatment.
  • The findings suggest that baicalin may help restore the barrier function of the BBB during ischemia.
