Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum AL44 treatment improved spatial learning and memory in D-galactose-treated mice.

  • AL44 significantly reduced hippocampal neuronal damage and neuroinflammation.
  • The intervention increased the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and synaptic proteins.
  • AL44 treatment was associated with decreased apoptosis through modulation of specific signaling pathways.
  • Gut microbiota remodeling occurred, with notable enrichment of Bacteroides and improved intestinal barrier integrity.
  • The treatment led to a shift in systemic metabolic profiles, notably increasing levels of citrulline, betaine, and kynurenine.
  • Fecal microbiota transplantation indicated that the neuroprotective effects of AL44 could be transferred via its modulated gut microbiota.
