How Infant Formulas with Active Ingredients May Affect Early Gut, Immune, and Hormone Development

Updated

Abstract

Bioactive-supplemented formulas are generally safe and well tolerated, supporting normal growth in infants.

  • Breast milk is the ideal source for infant nutrition, but alternatives can improve outcomes when breastfeeding is not possible.
  • Formulas enriched with prebiotics, probiotics, and other bioactive substances may enhance gut microbiota and gastrointestinal function.
  • Supplementation is associated with improved stool characteristics and intestinal barrier function.
  • The most consistent benefits are observed in the gastrointestinal tract rather than in systemic immune responses or neurodevelopment.
  • Current evidence on systemic immune effects and metabolic pathways is promising but varies and is mainly based on preliminary studies.
