Faster biological aging and problems in multiple body functions linked to higher death risk in NHANES and CHARLS studies

Updated

Abstract

In a combined analysis of 6,918 adults aged 60 and older, biological age acceleration showed a modest association with mortality.

  • In the NHANES cohort, biological age acceleration was linked to an increased risk of death with a hazard ratio of 1.206.
  • The four-domain functional impairment score was associated with mortality, indicating a stronger link than biological age acceleration.
  • In the CHARLS cohort, biological age acceleration did not correlate with limitations in activities of daily living or instrumental activities of daily living.
  • However, the three-domain functional impairment score demonstrated associations with both types of limitations in CHARLS.
  • Further analysis revealed that adding biological age acceleration to existing functional impairment measures did not significantly enhance predictive accuracy.
