Faster biological aging linked to muscle aging signs in young and middle-aged adults

Abstract

In a cohort of 165,015 adults, accelerated biological aging was associated with increased odds of myopenia and myosteatosis.

  • Phenotypic Age acceleration was linked to higher odds of myopenia (OR 1.16) and myosteatosis (OR 1.24).
  • The combination of myopenia and myosteatosis showed even greater odds (OR 1.51).
  • Longitudinal analyses indicated that accelerated biological aging increased the risk of developing myopenia (HR 1.21) and myosteatosis (HR 1.18) over time.
  • The risk of combined myopenia-myosteatosis also increased (HR 1.29) in those with accelerated biological aging.
  • Similar associations, though weaker, were observed with biological age acceleration based on chest radiographs.
  • Associations were consistent in participants under 40 years of age.
