Using genes to measure aging and improve care in gilthead sea bream farming

Environmental stressors induced gene expression patterns in fish that resemble those of older individuals.

  • Specific genes showed increased expression and lower methylation levels with age, while others had reduced expression and higher methylation.
  • High temperatures and low oxygen levels triggered transcriptional changes similar to those seen in older fish.
  • Nutritional interventions, such as restricted feeding and supplementation with specific ingredients, favored gene expression patterns typical of younger fish.
  • The findings suggest a potential link between biological age and stress responses in aquaculture, though direct reversal of aging signatures was not examined.
