Breakdown of nitrogen and boron-doped carbon nano-onions by cells and their role in triggering cell cleanup in immune cells

Abstract

Boron/nitrogen co-doped carbon nano-onions (BN-CNOs) displayed non-haemolytic properties while demonstrating cytotoxicity in degradation by-products after 150 hours.

  • Both BN-CNOs and their oxidised counterparts (oxi-BN-CNOs) maintained macrophage metabolic viability during tests.
  • OXI-BN-CNOs exhibited faster and more extensive degradation due to higher surface oxygenation compared to BN-CNOs.
  • The degradation efficiency of BN-CNOs followed the order: photo-Fenton reaction > human myeloperoxidase > horseradish peroxidase.
  • BN-CNOs and oxi-BN-CNOs were efficiently internalised by macrophages and triggered autophagy.
  • Oxi-BN-CNOs induced a stronger autophagy response and increased key autophagy-related proteins while minimizing inflammatory activation.
