  • Mitochondrial dysfunction may initiate a cascade leading to muscle damage through increased reactive oxygen species and impaired cell processes.
  • Chronic inflammation, particularly via IL-6 and TNF-α, could accelerate muscle breakdown and hinder regeneration.
  • Cellular aging processes may disrupt satellite cell function, further impairing muscle repair and contributing to muscle loss.
  • Degeneration of neuromuscular connections and resistance to muscle-building signals may exacerbate atrophy and functional decline.
  • Promising biomarkers for sarcopenia include GDF-15, FGF-21, IL-6, and myostatin, among others, but no single marker has sufficient diagnostic accuracy for routine use.
  • Integrated approaches using multiple biomarkers may enhance early diagnosis and personalized treatment strategies.
