A 3D Lab-Grown Human Muscle Model Showing Key Biological and Functional Signs of Aging

Updated

Abstract

A 3D biomimetic aged skeletal muscle model was developed using human primary skeletal muscle cells embedded in a decellularized extracellular matrix scaffold.

  • Aged constructs exhibited smaller myotubes compared to young constructs.
  • Altered expression of myogenic and inflammatory markers was observed in aged muscle models.
  • Mitochondrial changes were identified in the aged skeletal muscle constructs.
  • Calcium responses were delayed in aged models relative to younger counterparts.
  • Contractile forces were weakened in aged constructs compared to young constructs.
