Nature-inspired tiny cages that target damaged kidneys for combined diagnosis and treatment of sudden blood flow injury

Updated

Abstract

Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects an estimated 13 million patients each year.

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction in proximal tubular cells is a key feature of AKI pathology.
  • GIPL nanoparticles were developed to target injured kidney cells and deliver the antioxidant idebenone.
  • In vitro studies showed GIPL can scavenge reactive oxygen species and restore mitochondrial function.
  • GIPL enhances the process of removing damaged mitochondria while reducing signals that lead to cell death.
  • In vivo tests in mice revealed that GIPL preferentially accumulates in the kidneys and reduces injury and inflammation.
  • The design of GIPL allows its renal accumulation to be visualized using computed tomography.
