Genetic Differences That Make Bitter Taste Receptors More Sensitive Are Linked to Lower Blood Sugar After Eating

Abstract

Individuals with two copies of the PAV haplotype had significantly lower postprandial glucose levels than those with two copies of the AVI haplotype.

  • Analysis of data from approximately 220,000 European adults without type 2 diabetes revealed associations between TAS2R38 haplotypes and glucose levels.
  • A dose-response relationship was observed, with more sensitive TAS2R38 receptors linked to lower glucose levels after meals.
  • These associations were consistent with findings from published genome-wide association studies on 2-hour glucose measurements.
  • The effects persisted even after controlling for dietary and lifestyle factors associated with bitter taste perception.
  • No similar associations were found for other bitter taste receptors that do not appear to influence glucose metabolism.
