A two-part mRNA vaccine provides broad protection against different H5 and H7 avian flu viruses in chickens

Abstract

Chickens vaccinated with 50 μg and 80 μg of a bivalent mRNA vaccine were 100% protected against lethal challenges from both H5N1 and H7N9 avian influenza viruses.

  • The bivalent mRNA vaccine generated strong immune responses in chickens, with increased antibody production observed in a dose-dependent manner.
  • Immune sera demonstrated significant neutralizing effects against both homologous and different strains of the viruses.
  • Vaccinated chickens showed reduced viral replication in the lungs and lower rates of viral shedding.
  • Transcriptome analysis indicated that vaccination caused extensive changes in immune gene expression, enhancing Th1-type immune responses.
  • The findings suggest that this bivalent vaccine could be a viable candidate for managing H5 and H7 subtype avian influenza outbreaks.
