Black rice wine may reduce memory loss by changing gut bacteria and brain signals in aging mice

Abstract

Black rice wine (BRW) improved cognitive performance in a D-galactose-induced aging mouse model over 10 weeks.

  • BRW reduced gut dysbiosis by suppressing harmful bacteria and increasing beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
  • Distinct flavonoid enrichment in BRW was observed compared to aleurone-removed BRW (AR-BRW).
  • BRW led to restored intestinal barrier integrity and reduced levels of systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
  • Microglial activation and astrocytic reactivity were attenuated with BRW treatment.
  • Cognitive performance improvements were observed in mice treated with BRW, aligning its effects closer to the control group.
